Legal Woes for Online Love

I’ll be the first to admit that I am unduly wary of all the online dating sites that have been growing in popularity over the recent years. It seems that there is a site catering to every type of person out there and strangely enough, there are hundreds of ads featuring eligible people that apparently don’t want to venture outside to enjoy the age old dance of meeting people in bars or bookstores or other locations. Well, apparently some of the members of these sites have grown tired of spending their hard earned money on membership fees and then not having any results. Some of the larger sites are being sued because some of their members claim that the sites have padded their personal ads with fake profiles and what the lawsuit calls “professional flirters”, or site employees that are charged with luring potential members into the fold. Now if all this turns out to be true, then it is quite disturbing and should be prosecuted, but it certainly serves to only heighten my hesitancy to attempt finding true love online without ever having met the person before. I mean, just because someone types a glowing profile of their personality for an online ad certainly does not mean it is true... it’s just a more difficult version of weeding out the liars from bars and blind dates.
